Le Château du Clos Lucé – this special feature shares an incredible collection of photographs of an historically significant house in the city of Amboise in France where once Leonardo da Vinci lived for the final 3 years of his life. Mathias Lucas brings his unique vision to this project by sharing a terrific set of shots of vignettes and wide shots that feature some of the great details found in this incredible house.

GREAT PHOTOGRAPHY

Country Road – Adnan Bubalo delivers a high-contrast shot of a country road cutting through the center of the frame where it winds it’s way out into a terrific vanishing point. Warm tones from the natural light stream in through a soft mist that envelops the area, adding to the overall feel of the photograph.

Surrounded – Bay of Kotor, Kotor, Montenegro – as Len Saltiel tours the Montenegro region he encounters wonderful landscapes that are unique to this area of the world, coming away with this shot of a tiny community that sits upon the shores as dramatic mountains surround it. The architecture of the homes and buildings of the town create a view that expresses the area.

Mondayzzzzzz – the entire magic of great portraiture is always found in the face of the subject, in this case a fox sitting with it’s eyes closed. Roeselien Raimond’s shot leaves us all wondering what it is this terrific animal is thinking of while it sits there, creating a strong sensation of artistic tension for the viewer.

Austin Bats – Michael Criswell shares yet another example of how photography transcends location for the viewer, taking us to the city of Austin during a period of time in the year when a huge bat colony that lives under a bridge takes flight. These shots feature the bats in flight, of course, but also feature great silhouettes from the masses collected on the bridge to witness this amazing event firsthand.

Plot Twist – José Ramos captures a stunning landscape shot that features incredible colors and hues in a picture that takes advantage of an old and weathered wooden pier leading out into the expanse of the waters. The rich colors in the sky from the low-hanging sun find perfect harmony with the rich blues of the lake, creating a truly compelling shot to view and enjoy.

Breaching Humpback! – when you consider the sheer size of these immense creatures, seeing them in flight with almost their entire bodies out of the water takes on a whole different context. Ron Niebrugge’s stunning shot of one as it breaches it’s waters in Alaska gives us a glimpse into the details of these amazing animals. The only thing more amazing than seeing this in a picture would be to see one in person.

Mystic Pines – a limited color palette finds expression in this moody landscape shot from Kilian Schönberger that focuses on a grove of trees sitting in a thick covering of fog. The silhouettes of the trees peering out through the fog create a stunning ethereal feel, adding to the drama of the composition.

Beauty Amongst The Rubble – I’ve become somewhat fascinated over the past several years with vibrant graffiti art splayed out over the remains of walls of crumbling ruins. The dichotomy of the the color palette along with the expression of the artist juxtaposed against the decrepit remains can be rather mesmerizing, as shown in this great example of this genre posted here by Barbara Youngleson.

I love Bled – I frequently feature various shots from the Bled Lake in Slovenia, and for good reason as the region is full of history and character in both the incredible landscapes along with the medieval monastery and the castle that call the lake home. In this shot from Gürkan Gündogdu we find all the key elements of a great shot from this storied lake as wonderful natural light streams through and a gentle reflection in the semi-still waters of the lake showoff the natural beauty.

Reasons to Love Vancouver Island in Summer: #4 Dolphins – Vancouver Island is indeed an amazing place, full of various features, animals and landscapes that really only exist in this part of the world. Anne McKinnell shares a great set of shots of our local White-sided Dolphins at play in the waters, captured over the summer as she boated around enjoying all that the area has to offer.

Garden… – this mesmerizing shot of a still lake uses the beauty of a natural setting coupled with a stone arched bridge to create a great composition. Krzysztof Browko’s shot uses the angles of the bridge in conjunction with the still waters to capture a shot that features a great mirror-like reflection of the setting.

The Oculus – this great shot from Edith Levy takes on an abstract quality in terms of the dominant architectural features of this facility in New York. Edith processed this one as a black-and-white to highlight the drama of the incredible space, and all the tiny people milling about in the space add a perfect dash of interest to the shot here.

Brown Bear – a massive and beautiful large brown bear fills the frame in this stunning photograph by Urs Schmidli captured in the wilds of Finland. The bear is looking back at the camera in this shot, creating a strong sense of dramatic tension along with wonder at the power and elegance this incredible creature exudes.

Film Is Not Dead – Jim Denham shares some thoughts and a wonderful collection of photographs, many in black-and-white, captured using film cameras. There is just something special about these shots, something that is impossible to replicate in today’s contemporary digital realm.

Kirkjufell – Etienne Ruff utilizes a very long exposure time to capture this amazing landscape shot of a famous waterfall in Iceland. Dramatic clouds and a dynamic water feature all lend to the mesmerizing nature of this incredible and ethereal feeling photograph.

Crisp Blue – CJ Schmit’s shot is captured during the heart of the blue hour and is perfectly composed to take advantage of the natural leading lines and features of what I believe to be a war memorial in Milwaukee. The rich blues in the sky find perfect harmony against the crisp whites of the structures in this shot, along with the perfect lines, to create something truly special and compelling in a frame.

Rainy Days & Black Beaches – this incredible seascape focuses on a predominantly monochromatic blue color palette, adding to the cinematic aspect and feel of the vista. Tobias Hägg finds this scene with a thin covering of fog to add to the overall drama of the rolling ocean as it pounds against the shores.

Ted Rabbitts

Heilstätte S. – this series of shots features an abandoned sanitarium somewhere in Europe presumably. Each of the shots featured in this post reveal a deep sense of artistic tension in the context of trying to understand about the lives lived here, along with the suffering that many of these places embodied for those souls.

Naples#14 – Galleria Umberto I – an amazing shopping gallery in Italy shows off the incredible architecture of this region of the world in a photograph by chowE. This particular shot is processed in a manner meant to express the details in the architectural features highlighted by the natural light coming in through the glass roof above.
