Software communities tend to be some of the most loyal and rabid fan bases around, so it’s no surprise that seemingly small changes, to the outside at least, can cause nothing but consternation among longtime users.
This especially becomes challenging when one company attempts to purchase another or at least one of its popular software suites.
This was totally the case when Google purchased the Nik Collection, a suite beloved by photographers but forgotten by its then-new owners.
When Google purchased the Nik Collection, many people initially had high hopes for the new partnership. After all, who would not want to hitch their wagon to one of Silicon Valley’s brightest lights and one of the luminaries of the burgeoning smartphone photography sector.

Sadly, most of these hopes never came to fruition and were dashed when the software languished under Google’s ownership. While there are many theories as to why this occurred, no one really knows the full story.
Typically things like this happen because of a change in leadership or corporate priorities. A “business is business” thing at the end of the day some would say.
After it sold it to DXO, however, things began to change and longtime fans had reason to find cheer. A new owner with a newfound enthusiasm for the community and the product – a winning combination if ever there was one.
But Nik Collection users walked this road before.
Now, after a long wait, DXO announces that the Nik Collection will be re-released in early 2018 per a press release from the company. In a winter holiday greeting to its community, DXO welcomed the Nik community and insured users that its engineers were hard at work on a new collection of software.
As Canon Rumors points out, 2017 was a banner year for the development or announcement of new image editing software suites, with Macphun and now Nik Collection providing more than a strong challenge to industry stalwarts like Adobe.
