The Basics: There Are Essentially 3 Types Of Lenses
- Normal lenses (fixed 50mm prime lenses – or approx 35mm in crop sensor cameras) – normal lenses are “normal” because they replicate the field of view that the human eye normally sees. These lenses are great for people photography
- Wide angle lenses (below 50mm) – a wide angle lens is any lens with a short focal length. The shorter the focal length the wider the field of view. You can use this lens for expansive photos, think landscapes
- Telephoto lenses (anything above 50mm) – a telephoto lens has a long focal length, so a narrow field of view. This will bring subjects far away, close up. Perhaps use a telephoto for photographing the moon!
