7 Useful Links for Understanding Lenses

It doesn't matter if you are a Canon, Nikon, Sony or Fujifilm user (or any other), there is one single thing we all camera users have in common, and we crave for lenses. Understanding the whats and hows of lenses is not that easy if you try to figure out the stuff by your own.

Today we have got together a list of articles that will make you understand lenses better and in a very fun way. Before getting into the links, here is a super-fast guide for understanding lenses terminology:

The Basics: There Are Essentially 3 Types Of Lenses

  • Normal lenses (fixed 50mm prime lenses – or approx 35mm in crop sensor cameras) – normal lenses are “normal” because they replicate the field of view that the human eye normally sees. These lenses are great for people photography
  • Wide angle lenses (below 50mm) – a wide angle lens is any lens with a short focal length. The shorter the focal length the wider the field of view. You can use this lens for expansive photos, think landscapes
  • Telephoto lenses (anything above 50mm) – a telephoto lens has a long focal length, so a narrow field of view. This will bring subjects far away, close up. Perhaps use a telephoto for photographing the moon!

First thing's first, answering the ultimate question anyone asks itself when buying their first camera, which lenses should I buy? If you have already asked this question to a fellow photographer, it will be highly likely that you got this answer “it will depend on the type of photographs you'll want to achieve”. That is true, but how genres or photographs link to lenses exactly? Well, that's what Jason Row teaches us in this guide.

Here you will get a better understanding of how lenses are highly related to certain genres. This overview will help any new photographers figure out not just what kind of lens they should invest in, but guides them along their endless journey to perfect their style.

Following the logic of lenses being determined by the photographs one want to achieve, here is a useful guide linked with Street Photography.

This genre has a very close relationship with wide-angle lenses because they allow photographers to remain inconspicuous while getting close to their subjects, and also because they allow capturing richer contexts. In this guide, you can find three lenses you can consider if you are into street photography.

Zoom lenses are extremely useful for many photographic appliances, in this guide Dzvonko Petrovski shared with us a very useful guide for making that “decision-making process” a less complicated thing when it comes to the mighty zoom lenses.

Alright, it is true, there are many different prices and options for the same focal length, so what exactly makes one a better lens than other? Here you can find that out very quickly. There are many factors that come into play when considering a lens. From internal glass and components, design and speed, and even the closest focus distance you can manage, all of that and more can be found in this easy to digest article.

Not all lenses are extremely expensive, there are some really good deals at affordable prices. Here Jason shares some interesting and revealing insights into the pros and cons of investing in these sort of lenses.

If you are new to the world of photography, then we have a really great news for you. You can still use old film era lenses (which have stunning built quality and even highly respectable legacy at awesome prices). In this article, you'll find out more about this little photography hack.

Becoming a gear-head is a really hard thing to avoid, but still, you should try it. The best way to avoid the frustrations “gear-headism” gives is by seeing camera bodies and lenses as what they really are, mere tools that allow us to capture the images we want.

We hope that these links will be highly useful for you, and if you have peers that could find them useful, please feel free to share them out.

The lens in focus

“Life is like a camera. Just focus on what’s important and capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don’t work out, just take another shot.” — Unknown
