As we promised yesterday, Canon officially unveiled the all new full-frame mirrorless EOS R at a press event in Japan.
Calling the camera “an uncompromising balance of optical, mechanical and electronic engineering excellence enabling innovative full-frame lens designs, faster autofocus and high-speed communication between the camera and lens,” Canon has literally thrown down the gauntlet with its new EOS R.
Coming right on the heels of Nikon’s groundbreaking introduction of the new Z, the Canon EOS R also comes with the new RF lens mount which, similar to the EF mount, has a 54mm inner diameter but with a smaller flange focal distance as well as 12 electrical contacts.
While Canon is developing the RF lens family specifically for the full-frame mirrorless EOS R camera, other lenses can be used through a mount called the EF-EOS R mount adapter. This adapter expands the cameras compatibility to the EF, EF-S, TS-E, and MP-E lenses according to PetaPixel. There will also be a Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter for filters and a customizable control ring.
The EOS R sports a 30.3-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor with an ISO range of 100-40000 (expandable to 50-102400), and a DIGIC 8 image processor at 8fps continuous shooting speed (for bursts of up to 100 max-quality JPEGs, 47 RAW, or 78 C-RAW).
Pricing starts at a reported $USD 2,299 for the camera with a 24-105mm lens bundle coming at $USD 3,399 and should hit store shelves next month, October 2018.
The RF lenses, the RF 50mm f/1.2L, RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro, RF 24-105mm f/4L IS, and RF 28-70mm f/2L, will cost $USD 2,299, $USD 499, $USD 1,099, and $USD 2,999.
