Wonderful Oregon’s Nature Landscapes by Steve Schwindt – beautiful, colorful and detailed are just some of the descriptors that come to mind while checking out the terrific work of Steve Schwindt. These terrific shots are all captured in the northwestern region of the United States and do a great job of revealing the beauty of the natural environment in the region.

This Photographer Builds His Subjects with Cardboard – the title of this article may make the work sound a tad bit mundane, however, the pictures created by Juhamatti Vahdersalo are nothing short of amazing. Each of the shots presented in this post are created by hand by creating miniature models and then compositing them in Photoshop with other key elements, creating pictures that are as ethereal as they are mesmerizing.

Great Photography

before sun rise – this incredible composition comes to us from Tiger Seo who shares a terrific shot of a set of power lines set in a very unique landscape. The lines create a perfect natural leading line that guides us into the frame and out towards a vanishing point, all accented wonderfully by the great colors in the sky and the gentle reflections in shallow waters.

Hotel Silver Swan, Austria – check out this haunting series of photographs taken inside a long abandoned hotel on a mountainside in Austria. Obsidian Urbex Photography gives us a terrific set of photographs taken inside the derelict facility, capturing all the character that once thrived inside a now-defunct hotel that hasn’t had guests in quite some time.

A Dam Fine Night – Brett Gasser whisks us away to Amsterdam where a row of character homes the line the canals cast terrific reflections in the waters. The homes are all captured with crystal clarity, showcasing the incredible city and its world-renowned buildings that give it a distinctive presence perfect for photography.

Périgueux – Mathias Lucas takes us a wonderful exploratory journey of the community of Périgueux in France. Mathias has a great eye for composition, and as we always find with his photographs we find the true spirit and character of this wondrous town.

Tunnel – deep contrasts play with each other in the creation of this almost-abstract shot from Daria Klepikova that uses architecture as a means of casting shadows and creating lines. As the eye follows the natural lines in this shot, people are seen in the distance for a perfect touch of artistic tension.

Assembly Gone Bad – I personally find that Urbex themed photography is an amazing genre that gives us some insight into history through the visual study of the contemporary human condition through places that were once filled with people and now stand abandoned. This post from Michael Criswell takes us inside an assembly hall in Detroit city where the ravages of the post-modern economy have taken their toll leaving many places like this in a deep state of disrepair.

Portrait – this tight shot of the face of a primate reveals the spirit and personality behind the eyes in this wonderful photograph by Gitta Sladič. Gitta uses a very shallow depth-of-focus with this picture, guiding us gently into the eyes and producing a very strong portrait of the gentle creature.

A good night in Victoria – Jim Nix visits my hometown here on Vancouver Island where he captures a pair of iconic shots of two of our architectural treasures downtown. The first shot features the Legislative Building, and the second showcases the epic beauty of the Empress Hotel, both captured late in the day and both expressing the historic flavor of our little corner of the world.

Fields… – vivid greens create a strong sense of joy for the viewer in this shot from Krzysztof Browko that showcases the incredible beauty of South Moravia in the Czech Republic. The undulating flows of the fields create a dynamic composition here that invites everyone into the picture where the landscape ultimately tells its own story.

The Light Within – Edith Levy takes us to the famous Slot Canyons in Arizona where countless years of erosion have left behind amazing natural rock formations that are a mecca for most abstract photography enthusiasts. These canyons play with light and shadow, casting various tones of color that lead to their natural allure.

Death Valley National Park in twilight – the golden hour creates perfect light for this landscape shot that features the sand dunes of Death Valley with rugged short mountains in the distance to create a natural horizon. This shot from William Freebilly photography creates a bit of an abstract look with some great colors and tones from the waning light of day.

Tivoli At Night – Scott Wood’s shot of the water fountain on the capitol grounds here in Olympia, Washington reveals the beauty of a long exposure and the effect it has on water like this. The silky waters of the fountain blend perfectly with the classic architecture of the building behind it, creating a strong composition.

Dark Fortress – brooding skies and a foreboding castle dominate this incredible photograph that features a fortress that appears to step out of time. Alexander Riek’s composition takes full advantage of the dramatic sky to highlight the overall medieval feeling created by the stone and turrets that create a striking form against the landscape.

Walk on by – Christophe Staelens creates a terrific black-and-white shot of what appears to be a train station with a lone person striking a silhouette against the lighted opening to draw you in. The inherent drama of the monochromatic presentation helps to accent all the key elements that make this shot what it is.

In the neighborhood – Diane Schuller shares a small set of photographs from a great spot on Vancouver Island called Qualicum Beach. We visit this place often as it holds a special place in our heart, and a quick meander through Diane’s series of images here will show you just why.

Magnolia Gas Station – Evan Gearing creates a very nostalgic looking image of a classic gas station adorned with vintage signs and old gas pumps. The texture and tones used to finish this shot do a great job of creating an authentic looking picture from a historic time in American culture.

the opening light of day – a small rural pond creates a perfect subject for Frank King to capture as the first light of day crosses the horizon. The serene shot features some great colors and tones, as well as a perfect leading line found in the shore of the pond.

China Travel .. – the Li River in China is a photographers haven, revealing rugged mountains and beautiful waters that often cast near-perfect reflections, as we see in this great shot from Smoothy. The incredible orange color palette that dominates the sky finds perfect harmony with the silhouettes of the boats to create a truly compelling image.
