There’s a saying that any technology, sufficiently advanced, is indistinguishable from magic.
In the case of a camera that retouches a subject in real time, it really is a bit of magic. Or an impressive piece of kit, depending on where your mystical sensibilities lie. Either way, it is a development that has many people excited for the future of photography.

Of course, the medium is already infused with all kinds of magic but this is next level stuff – and another sign of the times.
Powered by AI (natch), this process involves everything that normal photo editing would do but without your input, only your approval of the final product.
The demonstration of this concept technology was done by Chinese company Z CAM. Known for their Micro Four Thirds interchangeable lens mount 4K camera, the company is looking towards the future with new ideas about what cameras can do.
A video released to the public shows AI retouching the subject’s face in real time and even tracking the changes as she moves her face around. To call it impressive is an understatement.

Really, though, real time photo editing is just the next step for AI which is already taking on the task of editing photos already captured. One of the biggest developments in photography outside of the rise of the smartphone, AI will probably do a lot of crazy stuff in the future. Heck, it’s already judging photography contests and even selling art on its own.
