Moments to Go Away Forever: Facebook Gets Rid of Photo-Sharing App

It's always sad to say “goodbye” to another photo app, but such is the cycle of life – especially when it comes to smartphone photography.

Facebook is closing down shop on its Moments app because no one is really using it.

If you're wondering why Facebook would have another standalone app alongside Instagram then you're not the only one – others couldn't figure it out either hence why the app probably failed to gain traction with any audience.

Launched in 2015, Moments is one of Facebook’s many attempts at doing something a little different than Instagram but with more of a bend towards privacy and sharing with friends and family.

The app used Facebook’s facial recognition software to tag – and allow you to subsequently share – photos with the people featured in them. It would keep these photos private to only those people tagged in them. It’s an interesting idea but one that never really caught on with people.

Probably because, as DPReview points out, no one used it and you have this same functionality on different apps including two from Facebook itself (FB and Instagram, to be exact).

Another app that collates photos into “moments” for sharing with other people is Google Photos. In fact, iOS even has a vaguely similar feature although it isn’t geared towards sharing it on a social platform.

People who have accessed the app in the past year should get a message from the company informing of the app’s impending end. Moments users will have between now and February 25th to get their “moments” collections exported using Facebook’s custom tool made just for the app.

One thing it reminds this author is how important it is to choose what apps to which you commit because it can all change in the blink of an eye.

Did you use moments? Are you sad about its demise? Let us know in the comments below.

“Life is like a camera. Just focus on what’s important and capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don’t work out, just take another shot.” — Unknown
