New day, new gear announcements – this time from Sony.
In a camera that is being compared to the a6300 just with more power, Sony announced a mid-range APS-C mirrorless a6400 which features a rear, flip-up touchscreen as well as a processor and autofocus system (AF) borrowed from the a9 models per a report in DPReview.

The a6400 will be capable of 24.2MP captures at 11 fps or 8 fps in silent shutter mode. It will also have full autofocus – a real selling point for the a6400.
In a press release from the company, Sony VP of Imaging Solutions at Sony Electronics Neal Manowitz said: “The α6400 represents another important step in the growth of Sony’s overall interchangeable lens camera lineup…By bringing so many of our latest and most advanced technologies from full-frame cameras to a brand new APS-C model, we are giving today’s creators more options than ever to realize their vision.”
As DPReview highlights, the autofocus will be a particularly fine-tuned autofocus system will have better and more persistent subject tracking thanks in part to the 425 phase detection points across the sensor. This, coupled with better eye tracking and face detection, will result in more stable images.
The camera will also have Movie Autofocus as well as making use of the Hybrid Log Gamma standard for HDR captures. DPReview says that Sony claims this results in a more natural range of colors in video but notes that the company is only promising compatibility with their own television sets and displays.
The press release highlights these new ancillary features with the following: “Also included are high-speed shooting at up to 11 fps4 with AF/AE tracking, a new-generation BIONZ X image processing engine that produces excellent image quality, 4K6 video recording, a fully 180-degree tiltable LCD touch screen and much more, making it the ultimate tool for all types of creators ranging from professionals to vloggers.”
Pricing remains competitive at $USD 900 for the body alone.
