Canon Introduces the Appropriately Named “Photo Culling Plugin” for Adobe Lightroom

Canon has unleashed a bunch of new products over the past several days but not all of them are actual gear.

The appropriately named Photo Culling Plugin for Lightroom Classic is, as the name would imply, a tool to help you manage your digital library more effectively.

Like everything these days, its powered by AI that is trained to help distinguish between varying “technical models” such as “sharpness, noise, exposure, contrast, closed eyes, and red eyes” according to PetaPixel.

It does this by examining a range of similar photos simultaneously which means that you as an end editor don’t have to spend time scrolling through waterfalls of variants.

For those control freaks out there, the plugin doesn’t delete the photos it deems unworthy despite what the name might imply. It uses a flag system with various colors representing different levels of quality.

If all of this sounds exciting to you, well, you won’t have to wait long. Canon promises the plugin will be available through the Adobe Exchange App store in March of this year.

But there is something that many of us might not be so keen on and that is a recurrent expense rather than a one-time fee to access the app’s services.

How much?

Well, mum’s the word on that for now (probably a good thing, too, as that could mar the whole announcement).

We suspect it’ll be something reasonable but it’s also another nagging reminder of the subscription revolution that’s sweeping software and services in the photography world.

You can watch a video explaining all of the app’s features over on YouTube by clicking here.

What do you think? Does this new Lightroom plugin from Canon sound like something you’d like to use? Let us know your thoughts in the comments as always.

The lens in focus

“Life is like a camera. Just focus on what’s important and capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don’t work out, just take another shot.” — Unknown
