Canon USA rolled out a huge change this week and it might impact their consumers in novel ways.
Basically, in an effort to cut costs according to reports, Canon USA has culled 15% of its authorized dealers which means you might have to travel a little bit further in the future to get that official Canon treatment you know and love.
Canon Price Watch reports, “Fewer dealers means less Canon USA expenditure on sales management, marketing, operations, and compliance. “
What is a Canon authorized dealer? Basically, a store that is allowed to sell you official merch. Or, as the company themselves state, “We recommend that you purchase your Canon ‘Consumer & Home Office’ products, supplies and accessories from Canon Authorized Dealers who are required to meet our high customer service and support standards. Please look for the Canon Authorized Dealer logo to ensure the integrity of your purchase.”
In total, Canon USA has eliminated 71 authorized dealers which takes their number down from 470 to 399, PetaPixel reports.

Needless to say, people on the Internet are not happy. Initial reports had an authorized dealer on a military base closing which definitely did not go over well until it was discovered that was erroneous information. Even so, this move isn’t surprising as all of the major optics manufacturers seem to be taking repair in house. In fact, it’s a general trend across multiple industries and one likely inspired by the margins enjoyed by Apple and their “full-service” approach to all of their electronic products.
