If social media users weren’t embarrassing us all, would it even be relevant to the conversation? One of the more annoying aspects of the current zeitgeist is this tendency to pose and take pictures anywhere and everywhere no matter if it is appropriate, prudent, or even safe in some cases.
From people disregarding barriers and plummeting to their death or, as in today’s story, people disregarding the gravity of a moment, Instagram and other platforms can’t help but bring out some of the most awkward behavior in some of us.
In a tweet that you can view here, Ava Duvernay, director of the Wrinkle in Time movies as well as the Netflix documentary When They See Us, shares a video from @influencersintw which shows a woman posing, in workout tights, in front of a T-Mobile store that had the front smashed.
As many people are pointing out, she seems to be doing the “take me back” pose (a mocking term for the Instagram cliche picture where the subject looks off into the distance, captioning the post with the aforementioned phrase).
In other words, the pose and the background don’t really match and, as many people seem to feel, it looks like the “influencer” is using a massive protest and property destruction to forward some kind of public persona. Basically people think this behavior is pretty gross and inappropriate, no matter how you feel about the protests themselves.
