The news that the new Canon EOS R5 would be able to shoot in 8K without cropping was met with a lot of praise in the photography press.

It was also followed by some pretty potent skepticism because, let’s face it, that’s pretty impressive and if it is too good to be true, it often is.
Most people thought that recording time in 8K would be more limited than Canon was letting on but it looks like that coupled with overheating seems to be the issue that is making the feature less-than-ideal in real-world conditions.
According to some charts that you can view by clicking here and here, the 8K video capture time, in the best of circumstances, is extremely limited.
The chart assumes a cooldown period of between 10 and 20 minutes between shots and that’s where the problem is coming in for some people. No one is surprised that the amount of time you can capture in 8K or other modes is limited, but the long cooldown period and then the subsequent threat of overheating again is what is getting attention. Shooting in 8K then letting the camera rest for 20 minutes will only yield a further 8 minutes of capture time in 8K before the camera shuts down.
If you can only let the EOS R5 take a break for 10 minutes, the capture time is 3 minutes, PetaPixel reports.
For consumers looking at the EOS R5 to capture video, these numbers are concerning not only because they are extremely limiting as to what kind of output you can get but also because they make many scenarios unworkable. And let’s not even talk about how expensive the EOS R5.
