Is a New Entry-Level Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera on the Way from Sony?

Sony’s not letting a bad quarter keep it down. The rumor mill says that, in fact, the company is looking to launch a new front in the mirrorless camera wars and this model is going to be aimed at the ever-popular entry-level market.

Of course, as a rumor we don’t have much to confirm or deny for you but, as these things tend to go, what starts as a whisper often ends up becoming reality.

So what do we know about this alleged entry-level mirrorless camera from Sony?

To start, the rumor says that the camera will be an entirely new line, not a part of the a7 or a9 lineups. PetaPixel speculates that the model could be part of either an a5 or a6 but, since no one knows anything for sure, that’s purely a best guess given Sony’s nomenclature so far.

As for the source of most of this information, it comes from none other than a patent. Filed in Taiwan, the patent describes an entry-level mirrorless that uses Sony’s NP-FZ100 lithium-ion battery and will have one SD card slot in addition to a built-in mic and headphone outlet, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth compatibility, and a USB Type-C port, PetaPixel reports.

In terms of pricing, most estimates put this mysterious Sony camera between $USD 800 and $USD 1000. That makes sense given the competition on the market.

We certainly won’t have to wait long to find out whether or not this camera is a reality. The rumor pegs the launch announcement for the middle of September but, as with everything this year, that could change depending upon how the pandemic impacts things before the premier date.
