The COVID-19 pandemic isn’t stopping camera companies from releasing new products and, depending on who you ask, that could be a good or a bad thing.
Wherever you might stand, Panasonic fans are already hyped over the upcoming LUMIX S5, a full-frame mirrorless camera with near top-of-the-line capabilities but coming in at a more affordable price.
What have we got on the horizon?
PetaPixel reports that the LUMIX S5 will have a 24-megapixel sensor with 2.36-million-dot EVF capable of 7fps continuous shooting in addition to 5-axis in-body image stabilization, a vari-angle touchscreen and, 4K/60p video in 10-bit 4:2:0, 4K/30p video in 10-bit 4:2:2, as well as Wi-Fi/Bluetooth wireless connectivity on top of dual SD card slots.
As for pricing, as an entry-level model, you can expect it to come in lower than the top-end $USD 4,000 S1H and $USD 2,000 S1.
In terms of the reveal, Panasonic will be using the now-common 2020 method of a virtual show. You can watch it at this link here on September 2nd if you are interested.
And the LUMIX S5 already has some competition waiting on it. As we confirmed about two weeks ago, Sony has an entry-level full-frame camera in the works and, given the company’s momentum of late, there’s little reason to doubt that is coming. Of course, all of this comes as some people wonder whether or not the intense competition in the consumer camera space is a good thing or not. No matter where you stand in that debate it isn’t like consumers don’t have options.
