Photo Attempt with Wild Bison Results in Photographer Getting Attacked

This isn’t the first time we’ve covered this kind of story but each time we do write about something like this it should serve as a reminder to us all that photography involving wildlife comes with added dangers.

A visitor to Custer State Park in South Dakota was attacked while attempting to take photos of wild bison. One bison was with its calf and this is believed to be the reason behind the attack. During the course of the attack, the bison tossed the female tourist, spinning her around on the ground to the point that it ripped her pants off. PetaPixel points out that perhaps the reason she survived is that the bison hooked her pants rather than her body. Reports indicate that the woman was a tourist from Iowa and a part of the 2020 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally passing through the area.

As things tend to go these days, the entire thing was caught on video.

The woman was flown out of the park and to a nearby hospital where doctors found that she was largely unharmed despite the violent attack.

As we discussed in the opening of the article, this isn’t the first time we’ve covered this kind of story – not even the first time this year. It’s really important that you be careful when you’re out there with animals. Thankfully the woman, in this case, wasn’t injured seriously.

What do you think of these incidents where someone gets too close to wild animals? Is it more common now that nearly everyone has a camera in the form of a smartphone or is it a phenomenon that has always been with us? Let us know your thoughts on this story in the comments section below.

The lens in focus

“Life is like a camera. Just focus on what’s important and capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don’t work out, just take another shot.” — Unknown
