Sony Releases Free Webcam Software for 35 of Its Cameras

Many of the new cameras released by manufacturers these days show off their dual capabilities as both cameras and video-recording devices. One prominent niche that is targeted, especially by entry-level models, are webcams.

But what if you didn’t need to buy a new camera to have a webcam? What if you could use a camera you already own? Such is the thinking behind some of the recent software releases by Canon and Nikon that lets their users turn their older cameras into webcam units.

Now Sony is getting in on the action and they’re going big. The company is releasing software that transforms no less than 35 of its models into potential webcams. Per PetaPixel, “Supported cameras include every Sony a7 and a7R since the Mark II, all three a7S cameras, both a9 cameras, and the a5100, a6100, a6300, a6400, a6500, and a6600.”

Yet, like others, this is only for Windows users so far.

If you would like to check it out, you can do that by clicking here. And you can download the utility by clicking this link.

These software updates couldn’t come at a better time for many users, some of whom are now working from home and teleconferencing more than ever before. Not only are cameras superior to most other webcam options, but the ability to use something you already own is a really consumer-friendly move by Canon, Nikon, Fuji, and, now, Sony.

What do you think of this trend among the camera manufacturers? Is this kind of software something you would be interested in having? Let us know your thoughts on this in the comments section below if you like.

The lens in focus

“Life is like a camera. Just focus on what’s important and capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don’t work out, just take another shot.” — Unknown
