It’s probably not a revelation that the majority of photographs taken today are captured with a smartphone camera.
But how many professional or self-anointed photographers use smartphone cameras for their work? After all, for some people, the use of a traditional or “real” camera is what separates the pros from your average smartphone user.
Suite48Analytics decided to conduct a survey and find out just how many photographers, if any, use a smartphone camera for their and the results were somewhat surprising.
The survey involved 881 photographers in North America and Europe with a focus on “general use” patterns but with a clear delineation between standalone cameras and smartphones, DPReview reports.
Unsurprisingly, for the overwhelming majority of professional work, photographers still prefer a standalone model. Even so, 11% of respondents said that they use a smartphone camera for over 50% of their professional work. That’s a lot higher than most people would have guessed. Suite48Analytics even points out that smartphone camera use is on the rise among photographers for professional work with 31% of survey respondents saying they use a smartphone camera now more than they did before.
For personal photos and the like, smartphone camera use is much, much higher with 29% of survey respondents taking over 50% of their personal photos via a smartphone’s camera. The model of choice for professionals that use a smartphone camera for some of their work? The survey found that the overwhelming favorite was an Apple iPhone with 86% of that cohort preferring the Cupertino brand.
