San Diego Zoo’s Underwater Cameras Give Visitors Unique Insights Into How Flamingoes Eat

Not all of our news has to be about Instagram controversies or expensive gear few of us can afford.

Sometimes we like to highlight the magic of photography in our everyday life.

And we have the San Diego Zoo to thank for today’s installment in feel-good news.

The organization decided to give visitors a more in-depth look at how flamingoes eat by installing underwater cameras to watch them.

In their description for the vide, the San Diego Zoo writes:

“Dive into the underwater world of flamingo dining

These pretty in pink birds feed by sucking in water and mud at the front of their bills, then pumping it out at the sides. Briny plates called lamellae act like tiny filters, trapping shrimp and other small water creatures for the flamingos to eat. Everybirdy loves seafood!”

You can watch a video of the flamingoes eating by clicking this link right here.

While this is flamingoes feeding in a zoo environment, their tactics in the wild are likely similar. As for their diet in captivity, the San Diego Zoo gives them a pellet that has all of the nutrition they need plus a little something to help keep their feathers pink, FStoppers writes.

The lens in focus

“Life is like a camera. Just focus on what’s important and capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don’t work out, just take another shot.” — Unknown
