Tamron Extends Work Stoppage Because of COVID-19 Economic Impact

The novel coronavirus is still impacting manufacturing for many of the industry’s biggest names with Tamron recently issuing guidance that its current work stoppage will continue into the foreseeable future.

In a press release titled, “About [the] extension of [the] partial closure of [the] Aomori factory due to the influence of [the] new coronavirus,”

“We would like to express our deepest sympathies to those who have died of the new coronavirus infection and to all those who have been affected.

Tamron Co., Ltd. has taken some measures to close its domestic Aomori factory in the May-September period in view of the decrease in global demand due to the worldwide spread of the new coronavirus.

However, the global market has not yet recovered, and in consideration of the uncertainty of the future market environment, we will continue to extend the partial closure of the domestic Aomori factory until the end of the year as follows.

・ Some factories closed: Hirosaki Factory, Namioka Factory
・ Target period: October 1st (Thursday) to December 31st (Thursday), 2020

Although the business will continue during this period, it may cause inconvenience and inconvenience to our business partners, but we appreciate your understanding.”

And Tamron isn’t the only company facing unique circumstances: Many of the biggest names in the industry are reporting massive losses and contractions in sales. This comes on top of years of declines in some segments.

But, as Mirrorless Rumors highlights, this is kind of scary given how well Tamron was doing in terms of sales prior to the pandemic. If one of the healthy companies is being impacted like this, we can only imagine what is going on with some of the others.
