Instagram Updates Nudity Policy After Plus-Sized Model Leads Campaign for Change

Instagram recently became the focus of a campaign because of the platform’s unequal application of its own policies regarding nudity on the platform.

Specifically, Nyome Nicholas-Williams noticed that she and other plus-sized black women were having their content censored on the platform while other models were not.

In a post to the service, she wrote: “I am aware images of black plus-sized bodies are still being taken down, I see the tags in comments and in my DM’s too. We are still working, these things just take time! Please remember that I’ll never stop fighting for what is right and this campaign is far from over! Until black plus-sized bodies stop being censored there is always work to do.”

This post was accompanied by an image of her cupping her breasts and elicited a warning from Instagram about violating their content policies.

As PetaPixel points out, what made all of this all the more baffling is the fact that Instagram’s brass had just touted the platform’s new, more inclusive policies regarding content moving forward.

After taking her story to The Guardian, a representative from Instagram told that publication that the photo was likely banned due to “breast squeezing” as opposed to cupping as shown in the photograph.

“As we looked into this more closely, we realized it was an instance where our policy on breast squeezing wasn’t being correctly applied. Hearing Nyome’s feedback helped us understand where this policy was falling short, and how we could refine it,” the rep told The Guardian.
