If this isn’t a sign of the times, we don’t know what is.
A digital art collection from the artist known as Beeple is currently going for $3 million at auction.
PetaPixel reports that the individual works of art are digitally authenticated and protected “with a unique non-fungible token (NFT) that guarantees its authenticity.”
What is that exactly?
A non-fungible token is basically like cryptocurrency for digital assets. It establishes ownership as well as the authenticity of a piece of digital property. Outside of digital art, NFTs have made appearances in video games and other digital collectibles.
Hosted by Christie’s, the auction features some 13 years of work and will actually accept cryptocurrency as payment for the digital trove.
A blurb for the auction reads:
“In EVERYDAYS: THE FIRST 5000 DAYS, the artist has stitched together recurring themes and color schemes into an aesthetic whole. The individual pieces are organized in loose chronological order: zooming in reveals pictures by turn abstract, fantastical, grotesque or absurd, deeply personal or representative of current events. Recurring themes include society’s obsession with and fear of technology; the desire for and resentment of wealth; and America’s recent political turbulence.”
Beeple, also known as Mike Winkelmann, is no stranger to selling digital assets and has done so before though the EVERYDAYS: THE FIRST 5000 DAYS is significant for the use of NFT technology to establish provenance and ownership of digital works.
