Meet NX Studio, Nikon’s New (and Free) Photo and Video Editing Application

One thing about it, there’s no shortage of photo and video editing options out there.

But that doesn’t mean we won’t welcome another into the mix.

Enter Nikon with its new, free NX Studio photo and video editing platform.

As Nikon points out, the platform seems to have many features common to most other platforms like Lightroom except for specifically tailored for Nikon cameras. Specifically, NX Studio “integrates the image viewing features of ViewNX-i and processing/editing features of Capture NX-D into one piece of software”

Intended to replace other professional software suites, NX Studio incorporates a large number of interface optimizations and changes to enable a “seamless” experience for the end-user, as Nikon notes on the product’s launch page, “The menu structure has been optimized for simplicity and utilizes the same terms found in Nikon camera menus. Items are grouped logically for ease of use and palettes can be customized to create your own workspaces.”

One of the biggest hurdles to getting users to switch from piece of software to another is ingrained workflows and the immediate perception of a loss of productivity when working in a new environment. Making the user interface as intuitive and easy to use, from the start, as possible not only makes it less of a hassle for people to switch to a new piece of software but also encourages feature exploration and experimentation.

Sadly, many pieces of productivity-oriented software fail at the balancing act between catering to a legacy group of users and welcoming in new blood, a problem that NX Studio won’t have directly but could face implicitly as it competes with Lightroom and Capture One, among others.

Yet, at the asking price of $USD 0, we expect that NX Studio will have more than a few takers.

You can check out the software for yourself here at this link.

Does Nikon’s NX Studio read like something you would be interested in using? What do you currently use for photo and video editing? Are you satisfied with it? Let us know your thoughts on this topic in the comments section below.

The lens in focus

“Life is like a camera. Just focus on what’s important and capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don’t work out, just take another shot.” — Unknown
