“Fatal Bug” Leads Canon to Temporarily Cease Downloads of EOS R6 Firmware

Less than 24 hours after Canon released it, the latest firmware for the EOS R6 was pulled due to what is being called a “fatal bug.”

Version 1.3.0 was pulled shortly after reports emerged that there were issues when users attempt “shooting 1080p in 100p or 120p in cropped mode or using EF-S lenses,” FStoppers reports.

A message on Canon’s website reads: “Unfortunately the latest firmware version 1.3.0 for the EOS R6 is temporarily unavailable, we anticipate the firmware being available in the near future so please check back soon for your download.”

As we covered yesterday, Canon isn’t just pulling downloads of firmware from off the market (albeit temporarily); the company is also canceling a bunch of DSLR lenses as part of a general roadmap to emphasize technology and services in the future. You can check out that article at this link.

UPDATE: It looks like Canon has release EOS R6 firmware version 1.3.1 on their website which, ostensibly, should fix the fatal issue being reported before.

From the update notes, Version 1.3.1:

“4. Fixes a phenomenon, in which in rare instances, the camera cannot function normally when the drive mode is set to “High-speed continuous shooting” to shoot still images continuously.

5. Fixes a phenomenon that may corrupt the image displayed in the viewfinder.
6. Fixes a phenomenon in which the power may become suspended when the camera is powered via USB for an extended period of time.
7. Fixes a phenomenon, in which the camera stops to operate normally when the movie cropping setting is set to [Enable] for performing movie shooting in Firmware Version 1.3.0.”
