The virtual arms race to meet and match growing competition from TikTok just got knocked up another level this week as Instagram announced its direct challenge to Duets with Remix for Reels.
For those of us not heavily involved with the TikTok platform, Duets is a feature wherein a person’s reaction to another’s content is recorded and shared for audiences. Among TikTok’s more unique features, it is also one of its most popular. As such, Instagram has tested its own version of this TikTok staple for a while now with an official rollout for Remix for Reels occurring on March 31st for most users around the world.
PetaPixel reports that this feature only works on new Reels generated after the update’s launch and not for previous posts. To access this feature, users need to tap on the ellipsis or three dots on the screen while watching the Reel.
A post on Twitter (of all places) reads:
“Re-re-re-remix
Now you can use the Remix feature in Reels to create your own reel next to one that already exists
Whether you’re capturing your reaction, responding to friends or bringing your own magic to trends, Remix is another way to collab on Instagram.”
Instagram also posted a video on how to use the new feature that you can access at this link.
As we have covered here, Instagram is constantly updating its app to accommodate everything from privacy and security concerns to meeting TikTok’s challenges as they arise. Of course, this isn’t to discount Snap and their forays into wearable devices and now possibly selfie drones. In short, it’s interesting to see what trends emerge on these platforms with regard to digital media as it gives us some idea of why companies like Canon are looking towards services and AI-driven cameras as a future revenue model. Meeting market demands for generating this kind of novel content is unlikely to slow down any time soon and, because of that, it’s almost impossible to imagine what kinds of stuff we will see in the near future.
