While it was long rumored to be in development, it was always just a rumor that, once again, has proven true – much to the delight of Canon fans we might add. We're just glad we can finally bring you something positive, especially given the tenor of some of our news about Canon of late.
Canon made it official today that they are indeed developing the EOS R3 full-frame mirrorless camera and is powered by a 35mm full-frame, back illuminated, stacked CMOS sensor and a DIGIC X image processor. Joining its stablemates the EOS-1D X Mark III flagship DSLR camera and the EOS 5 series, Canon is touting the camera’s “high speed, high sensitivity and high reliability.”
Of course, in its press release for the camera, Canon is highlighting the sensor and image processor, writing, “The EOS R3 is the first EOS series camera to be equipped with Canon's newly developed 35mm full-frame, back illuminated, stacked CMOS sensor that makes possible high-speed readout. The camera also features a DIGIC X image processor for high-speed image processing that realizes high-speed continuous shooting of up to 30 frames-per-second1 (FPS) with AF/AE tracking when using the electronic shutter, In addition, the camera significantly reduces image warping, a common challenge with electronic shutters, and is also capable of capturing moving subjects with reduced noise in such low-light environments as indoor areas or nighttime scenes.”
In addition to the dual-pixel CMOS AF technology, the new EOS R3 is going to make use of an algorithm produced by deep learning technology that will be attuned to recognizing the human head and eyes as well as the torso providing next-level subject tracking, Canon writes. Detecting additional subjects is a future feature that Canon is developing with regard to subject tracking. It is also the first Canon EOS camera to feature an eye control function that monitors the movements of the user’s eye and adjusts the AF frame.
