DJI unveiled a new, smaller drone today that takes some of the capabilities of the company’s larger Mavic 2 Pro and puts them in a new, more compact form factor.
Meet the Air 2S, DJI’s all-in-one solution for the drone pilot that wants to take dynamic photos and video. Equipped with a 1-inch sensor capable of taking 20MP photos, 5.4K video at up to 30 frames per second, and 4K video at up to 60 FPS at 150Mbps, the Air 2S also comes with a range of content creation tools as well as the standard photo modes in addition to three others including Timed Photo, AEB, and Panoramas.
The Air 2S also has something called SmartPhoto mode that selects one of several presets in order to give your photo or video an optimized appearance. SmartPhoto uses deep learning and scene analysis when deciding whether to apply HDR, Hyperlight, or Scene Recognition. The first combines multiple photos together while the second is for low-light scenarios. The last, Scene Recognition, looks for common settings to tie photos together.
Capable of staying aloft for 31 minutes on a single charge, the Air 2S also has four-way directional obstacle sensors to prevent collision with obstacles using APAS 4.0, DJI’s most advanced autopilot system yet. Naturally, being a drone, the Air 2S also has some preprogrammed flight modes to help utilize all of those content creation tools without the need to manually pilot the drone at the same time. These preprogrammed flight modes include MasterShots, FocusTrack, Hyperlapse, and QuickShots.
As the name implies, MasterShots takes a decidedly cinematic approach with capture modes including Proximity, Portrait, or Landscape. Used in tandem with the DJI Fly app and users can generate content for immediate sharing on online platforms.
FocusTrack centers on a subject and offers three tracking options such as Spotlight 2.0 (where the pilot manually flies the drone while it keeps the subject in focus), Point of Interest 3.0 (where the drone flies around a point of interest without a pilot’s assistance), and ActiveTrack 4.0 that keeps the subject in focus and automatically tracks them.
Arriving at $USD 999 and $USD 1299 respectively, the base DJI Air 2S and Fly More Combo both include the drone, controller, battery, and necessary accessories, but the latter also includes some ND filters, two more batteries, a bag, and a charging hub.
