Der Schwede Oscar Gustav Rejlander war ein Pionier der künstlerischen Fotografie. Während andere darum stritten, ob Fotografie mehr als nur die Reproduktion der Welt bieten kann und an ihrem Kunstanspruch zweifelten, erschuf er das wohl aufwändigste und gleichzeitig umstrittenste Bild des 19. Jahrhunderts.
