Canon shook up the world of 8K full-frame mirrorless cameras today when an interview with Yoshiyuki Mizoguchi, product guru for the Japanese optics giant, was printed in Imaging Resource in which Mizoguchi said that an 8K EOS R is in the works and on the way.
This came as shock because, as PetaPixel points out, Canon didn’t join the 4K mirrorless market until the EOS M50 in February of last year.
An 8K EOS R this soon would mean that Canon isn’t fooling around anymore in its bid to dominate the full-frame mirrorless camera market.
Specifically, Mizoguchi told Imaging Resource: “Video will play a huge role in the EOS R System for sure…For example, an 8K video capable camera is already in our EOS R-series roadmap. …And we are not just looking at video from a camera perspective, we are also working on how to make RF lenses better for video capture as well. For example, the RF 24-105mm F4L was the first L-series lens with Nano USM technology, which contributes to silent and smooth autofocus while shooting video.”
Though he didn’t give a definite date as for when we would see the camera, most people think it is probably already in the works and well on its way, especially given Canon’s penchant for being conservative.
Basically, the company doesn’t announce something unless it is going to happen.
As for what approach the company is taking in terms of design, Mizoguchi had this to say: “We are looking to further extend the Nano USM-equipped RF lens lineup…Paired with Dual Pixel CMOS AF, a wide range of Nano USM equipped RF lenses will promise video creators great image quality as well as impressive autofocus together in the R-series.”
