Samsung is pushing further ahead with smartphone innovations, revealing a 64MP sensor to the world today.
This isn’t totally surprising. In fact, it is quite expected. Nonetheless, it is awesome to see Samsung literally building the next level of smartphone sensors right before our eyes on schedule, as promised.
Yongin Park of Samsung said of the sensor, “Over the past few years, mobile phone cameras have become the main instrument for recording and sharing our everyday moments…With more pixels and advanced pixel technologies, Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 […] will bring a new level of photography to today’s sleekest mobile devices that will enhance and help change the way we record our daily lives.”
The GW1 uses tetracell technology the merges four pixels into one for sharp resolution in any lighting situation according to PetaPixel. The result is a 16MP photo in a low-light setting and 64MP photos in bright settings. It also supports up to 100 decibels of real time high-dynamic range where Samsung notes, “In comparison, the dynamic range of a conventional image sensor is at around 60dB, while that of the human eye is typically considered to be around 120dB.”
In terms of video, Samsung says, “GW1 is equipped with a Dual Conversion Gain (DCG) that converts the received light into an electric signal according to the illumination of the environment. This allows the sensor to optimize its full well capacity (FWC), utilizing the collected light more efficiently especially in bright environments. Sharper results can be delivered through Super PD, a high-performance phase detection auto-focus technology, and full HD recording at 480 frames-per-second (fps) is supported for smooth cinematic slow motion videos.”
As far as production of the ISOCELL Bright GW1 goes, Samsung plans on ramping up factories in the latter half of 2019.
Currently there are no devices planned that make use of the new 64MP sensor though we expect it will show up in Samsung’s lineup of smartphones eventually. Of course, we’ll let you know when that happens.
