An 8TB Portable SSD Could Be on the Way from SanDisk

We don’t know about you, but storage issues are a constant problem – especially when dealing with ultra high-resolution video or photos.

Luckily for us, SanDisk is trying their best to quench our thirst for more – and better – portable storage and their latest effort is certainly turning heads.

It’s nothing less than an 8TB portable SSD. You read that right: 8TB. That should not only take care of most photographers' needs in the hard drive department, but it will probably be really useful for hard-drive-consuming videography as well.

In a press release about the new product, Western Digital said:

“Inspired by consumers’ desire to capture rich content and keep it with them, Western Digital continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible with an 8TB SSD prototype…Combining its expertise in flash memory with skillful design, the company continues to be at the forefront of developing revolutionary solutions that keep up with and surpass today’s consumer needs.”

No word yet on when we can expect this product to hit store shelves.

One thing that might dampen consumer enthusiasm could be the price.

As PetaPixel points out, the 2TB Extreme Portable SSD will set you back some $280 so we can only imagine what an 8TB model might cost. Still, there is reason to hope this sees the light of day in the future.

It is notable that the consumer response has been largely positive if not downright enthusiastic.

One major factor that is pressuring drive makers to do this kind of thing is the fact that smartphones and other ubiquitous gadgets are making higher quality media every day. By definition that stuff is going to have a larger footprint on your hard drive and running out of space is just not an option.

What do you think of SanDisk’s new SSD? Is 8TB enough for you? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
