Videographer Records His Own Stuff Getting Stolen During a Rally in Toronto

Maybe a rally isn’t the best place to leave your camera gear unattended but you can’t fault this guy for still getting the shot at the end of the day.

A shot of what? A crime in progress, no less.

Javon Martin had his gear stolen in Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto and he captured it all on video. Martin was attending an anti-racism rally in the square and had set up cameras to capture the event. That’s when someone decided to steal his stuff.

Of course, as is so often the case when this happens it isn’t the gear alone that causes concern but also the loss of any work you might have had stored on that equipment.

“The hard drives and all the client data and all the footage that we’ve actually recorded is what we’re really missing. All the [gear] is replaceable, but the events that happened in the past, even the ones before social distancing, we can’t get those back. That’s the real value that was lost.”

PetaPixel estimates the total value of the stolen goods between $USD 3,700 and $USD 7,400.

Since the story went viral, Martin has gotten a lot of support from the community and he’s hoping to locate his gear eventually.

Of course, getting your gear stolen right in front of you is one way but there is also the scamming route. Remember that story we brought to you last year about the photographer who sold his Sony camera online, only to have it stolen right from under him and get absolutely no support from the platform that helped facilitate the deal? You can read that here.

The lens in focus

“Life is like a camera. Just focus on what’s important and capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don’t work out, just take another shot.” — Unknown
