Ansel Adams “The Grand Tetons and the Snake River” Sells for Nearly $1 Million at Sotheby’s

Some of you might remember we told you about a huge collection of Ansel Adams prints going up for auction at Sotheby’s.

The David H. Arrington Collection of Ansel Adams Masterworks not only sold well, with 98% of the lot going to buyers according to DPReview, but also the iconic “The Grand Tetons and the Snake River, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming” sold for $USD 988,000.

Purchased directly from a descendant of the famous photographer, the David H. Arrington photograph was part of a series of work commissioned by the US Department of the Interior. An enthusiast himself, David H. Arrington began his collection in his 20s and amassed one of the world’s most impressive, DPReview adds. Needless to say, offering up such a collection for auction was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many collectors.

All in all, the photographers sold brought in $USD 6.9 million, a sum that actually exceeded Sotheby’s estimates.

Head of Sotheby's Photographs Department in New York Emily Bierman said of the auction:

“The spectacular results…not only affirmed Ansel Adams as one of the most important artists of the 20th century, but also that his subject matter is as relevant today as when it was created over half a century ago.

The collection put together by David H. Arrington was unprecedented in its scale, scope, and condition, and now proudly takes its place among the most significant collections of photographs to ever come to auction. Handing this collection has been an enormous privilege for our entire team, and, personally, an opportunity I will cherish in my career.”
