One thing about the digital economy is that it is emphasizing the monetization of art assets without actually giving anyone ownership over them. That concept has led to an explosion in streaming services that deliver everything from games to television shows.
Could that model work for photography?
A company is bringing the Spotify and Hulu-esque business model to the photography business and it hopes creatives could benefit in the process.
As PetaPixel points out, the company called WindowSight does ask a good question and that is “Where do we go to view our favorite photographers and the work outside of Instagram?”
After all, it’s not like you’re making any money off of a like or a comment on Facebook’s popular service. WindowSight wants to change that by actually helping creators monetize views of their work in the exact same way that Spotify pays artists for people listening to music.
From their website FAQs for artists interested in signing up for the service:
“WindowSight is a new platform for artists to earn money by offering their art in high quality. Artists have their art published in the app and get paid according to the amount and time of TV displays, so they earn for the direct enjoyment of their work.
Plus, they get all of the features of a premium user, which means they can use the app to display their and other artists’ work for free.”
