Too often, our articles are about the waning interest that consumers have in traditional cameras.

And while instant cameras might not be the pure “definition” of traditional, they’ve certainly found a niche.

That’s why when we read that Leica is bringing another generation of its Sofort instant camera line to market, we had to check it out and we must say it is a sleek, beautiful design if anything else.

DP Review reports that the Sofort 2 is a 4.9 MP camera with a “tiny Type 1/5 (2.9×2.2mm) CMOS sensor and a 2.4mm F2 lens that gives a 28mm equiv angle of view.”

Best of all, it uses Fujifilm’s Instax Mini film which is pretty commonly available in most markets.

DP Review also notes that the internal memory has grown from 45 images to up to 850 images with a 1GB microSD expansion. Additionally, the Sofort 2 has the requisite Bluetooth compatibility and concomitant access to the Leica Fotos app for smartphones. This is an interesting feature in that it will not only print off the pictures captured by the Sofort 2 but also any that are within your smartphone's library. The Sofort 2 comes standard with 10 lens effects including normal, vignette, soft focus, blur, fisheye, color shift, light leak, mirror, double exposure, and half-frame.

If all of that sounds cool to you, then Leica might have your number with the Sofort 2 but that also brings us to the topic of price. As you can expect, being a Leica, the unit is not cheap, and at $USD 390, this is no exception.

New AI platforms are popping up every single day yet the question of “how” they gained their abilities remains in some instances.

While some companies are upfront about what their data policies are, others are a little more opaque.

Either way, that hasn’t stopped some pretty massive lawsuits from being filed.

If you want to protect your content, it might be better to make sure you are and “request” to be excluded from this training according to a recent article in Wired.

Wired points out that this doesn’t get rid of any information Meta has on you currently from your use of the company’s apps but it does prevent your data from third-party usage:

“It’s important to point out that this form does not pertain to the gobs of personal information Meta has already collected from you on its platforms; it only applies to outside data the company may bring in to beef up its generative AI. This outside data could include stuff that’s elsewhere on the internet as well as data purchased from third-party data brokers.”

The use of data whether consented to implicitly or not through end-user agreements is one of the major controversies of our time and it is not only an issue in digital media but also in other creative avenues as well. We’ve covered some of the ins and outs of the issue as well as tried to posit what AI means in terms of the “art” side of media. And what’s particularly important to note is that we are at the very onset of this revolution and the level of sophistication we are already seeing is somewhat mind-blowing. Imagine where it will be in ten years, or even 20?

The number of services offering generative AI capabilities is growing by the day.

If you’ve paid attention to this blog, you’re probably aware that Google recently debuted such a feature in the company’s famous search bar.

Now, after offering you help with creating AI images, the company wants to help you identify them using image metadata.

It makes sense given the company’s primary focus on returning relevant search results to users.

And using it is simple enough: Engadget demonstrates it on an image search results page by accessing the three dots and then running a scan of the image. In addition, you’ll get much more than that with information including the original publication date.

Envisioned as a way to combat “fake news” reports using AI-generated imagery, it will be interesting to see how sophisticated it is in distinguishing some sort of malicious intent from a benign one. Of course, we imagine in the beginning that it won’t be able to do this which makes us ask “Will product images using AI-generated backgrounds come up as a ‘fake’ or how will it be classified?”

Engadget notes that this feature will be rolled into Google’s existing “Fact Check Explorer” tool, an app developed to help journalists navigate the sea of digital information out there.

In contrast to this, we recently covered a world-first award for the best AI-generated image not too long ago. While this brought up questions about “how” AI can be art, it simultaneously underscored the development of this “trend” as a whole genre all its own.

Looking for the perfect photograph for your media campaign used to be a really painful process.

And then came the advent of massive online libraries like Shutterstock that made everything a whole lot easier.

But there is still one major flaw to this system and that is that the archive only contains what is submitted to it.

That is, until the advent of generative AI and its uncanny ability to alter elements within photographs.

With this new technology, you can generate an entire scene via nothing more than a text description or you can generate additional elements to put into existing photographs. To call this a “game changer” is certainly one perspective to have on all of this.

Now you can do this with the Shutterstock archive using what the company is calling Creative AI. Some of the features being touted include Magic Brush, Expand, Variations, Filter, Crop, and Background Remover. You know, the usual suspects.

Marketed as a tool for making marketing images, among other things, easier to produce, Shutterstocks’ foray into this area is pretty similar to other efforts we’ve seen albeit with access to the company’s massive library.

Naturally, all of this brings up questions of compensation and limitations. First, not everything in the Shutterstock archive is available for generative AI manipulation and those images that are used will provide compensation to the original creator. Further, and as is becoming increasingly common, AI-generated images won’t be available for license in the broader archive thus preserving the integrity and provenance of the original work, PetaPixel reports.

AI can do some pretty amazing things, but can it read your mind?

A new development at Meta, formerly known as Facebook, claims to do just that as the company announced an AI tool capable of rendering your very thoughts into imagery with a degree of accuracy that, if true, is quite eerie indeed.

Social media at the speed of thought? Given how little thinking goes into some current posts, that’s probably the more terrifying probability here but it does make us ask, what’s in it for Meta with this technology? Are we going to post to Instagram directly from our brains?

It’s actually more complicated, benign, and (at this point) beneficial than that.

“This AI system can be deployed in real time to reconstruct, from brain activity, the images perceived and processed by the brain at each instant. This opens up an important avenue to help the scientific community understand how images are represented in the brain, and then used as foundations of human intelligence. Longer term, it may also provide a stepping stone toward non-invasive brain-computer interfaces in a clinical setting that could help people who, after suffering a brain lesion, have lost their ability to speak.”

In other words, this development could help ease the transition to direct interfaces with digital devices and even medical applications. That’s pretty cool and a real change of pace compared to some of the other AI articles we have covered.

Still, the possibility of transferring images from your brain into reality is absolutely intriguing and the potential avenues for artistic expression are pretty unreal.

Last month, my primary camera failed. The shutter button stopped firing. It was fine on the half-press, but pushing it fully would not trigger the shutter. As it was Fujifilm, the camera body had a two-year guarantee. Being only nine months old, it was still under guarantee. 

Here’s where things can get awkward if you buy online. Some online stores can make it difficult to return products. They certainly make it difficult to talk directly with them. Sometimes, the only alternative is to go directly to the manufacturer. Whilst I am sure Fujifilm is great to deal with, I didn’t have to. You see, I bought my camera from a bricks and mortar store. In this article, I am going to explain why you should as well. 

The Demise Of The Camera Store

When I started in photography, there were camera stores in virtually every town. They often did not stock a whole lot beyond film and a few camera models, but what they did have was expertise. That was the 1980s. 

Fast forward to the 90s, and those camera stores started to disappear. It wasn’t the Internet that caused this; it was the homogenization of the high street by the national and international brands. This forced out the small individual camera stores as rent became too high.

Then, the Internet did arrive. Big box companies online had massive purchasing power and much smaller overheads. They passed on some of that to the consumer, meaning photographic equipment was much cheaper through an online purchase. Some camera stores remained, though. Let’s look at the partial return of the camera store. 

The Fight Back

The local camera stores that have survived to today have done so due to two main factors. First, they embraced the rise of online selling and set up their own web stores, hence increasing their potential customer base. This also increased their purchasing power.

Secondly, they offered a much wider range of products, in store. Their Internet presence also enabled this. 

Here in the UK, quite a few very good bricks and mortar camera stores exist. Some have become fairly large chains, such as WEX Photographic. Others have one or two stores but provide very high standards of service and expertise as well as an extensive range of products in store. One well-known chain, Jessops, has gone bankrupt a couple of times through the last three decades but is now back. They have fewer stores in fewer cities, but their expertise is significantly better than in their previous incarnations. But why should we use real camera stores? Surely, online is still cheaper. 

Why Local Stores Are So Important: A Personal Perspective

When my camera failed last month, I immediately knew where I stood. I bought it from a store, and they had a telephone number. I spoke to a real human, in my own country who immediately understood how to deal with my problem. I was given two options: they would arrange a courier to collect the camera the next day, or I could drop by my local store and hand it in. I chose the latter as I am a sucker for a visit to any camera store. 

I took it in on a bank holiday, when the stores are usually open, and courier companies rarely work. The guy behind the counter was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. He took the camera and told me they would contact me as soon as it was ready. They did, a mere three weeks later; kudos to Fujifilm UK for the quick repair as well.

But that’s not the sole personal reason. Late last year, I had an attack of the full frame FOMO. There was a strong pull in me to go for a Sony A7IV, an undoubtedly brilliant camera.

The fact that I had a camera store near me meant that I could go to them try both the Sony Alpha 7IV and the Fujifilm X-H2, side by side. The Fuji won, but the camera store also won as due to their help and expertise, I purchased not only the camera but two lenses from them. 

I suspect I would have gone for Sony if I had bought it online. Having them both in my hand made me realize the Fuji was the one I needed 

Other Reasons To Use Your Local Camera Store

You might think that prices are more expensive in bricks and mortar stores. Sometimes they are, but not always. If you look at the percentage price difference over your multi-thousand-dollar purchase, that difference becomes really quite small.

You get to hold the camera and lens combination in your hand for that small extra cost. You get to spend time with an expert who will guide you in the right direction for you. Good stores, such as the one I bought from, will not try to sell you the most expensive gear; they will sell you the most appropriate gear. In my case, the Sony Alpha 7iv was significantly more expensive than the Fuji, but the sales clerk still, correctly, pushed me toward the Fuji.

Beyond the actual purchase, local camera stores have good local knowledge. In my case, they knew excellent professional printers nearby, but equally, they might know local locations and even recommend photography clubs. More importantly, perhaps than anything else, you are engaging with another human, one who shares your passion for photography. Something that you will never get from ordering online. 

The title of this article is why you should cherish your local camera store. I hope some of the information I suggested today resonates with you. Whilst there is, of course, a place for online sales, even in photography, if you are purchasing a camera, lens, or other high-value piece that you will own for many years, why trust it to an online bot in order to save a few dollars? Go to your local store, chat with them, and get what you really need, backed up by good service.

The advent of AI is a watershed moment for many industries.

And the question of how these platforms became so sophisticated is one that is heading to the courts.

That’s not shocking, given that so many of these generative AI trained themselves on the works of acclaimed masters in fields ranging from photography to literature. Just how much so is what remains to be determined and how creators will be compensated, if at all.

But figuring out whether or not AI infringed on copyright is only half of the problem, the other being “how can creators protect themselves moving forward?”

Some researchers at the University of Chicago in the United States think they’ve found the answer with a poison pill that protects your work from the copying eyes of AI platforms.

Called Nightshade, it literally “poisons” the way AI is able to learn and create content, Engadget reports.

Ben Zhao and his team also released a tool called Glaze that “subtly alters” the pixels on a digital work such that generative AI platforms see something different from what the image is. The addition of Nightshade is another layer of protection for creators using Glaze, Engadget notes.

So, the question is: Could this be abused? Of course, like anything, Zhao points out that such a thing would need to be done at scale; as such, these tools are envisioned as options for creators who are looking for a way to protect their digital works now. Given the relative youth of the industry, such tools are few and far between and provide creators with at least some options for protecting their work.

One of the most popular platforms in the world, TikTok is known primarily for its short-form video content. 

But that could all be changing if a select trial of longer-length videos is any indication of where things are heading in the near future.

TechCrunch reports that the Instagram rival is rolling out fifteen-minute video capabilities to some users to test what could become a standard feature. 

For those of us who don’t really pay attention to this kind of thing, this seems like a natural pivot. After all, TikTok made its name with video so why not up the ante? 

Yet there are some other competitive pressures afoot that might incentivize such a move, namely the aforementioned Instagram but also YouTube. 

The latter made its name as the go-to platform for video content, and it is trying to capture that magic with the TikTok generation with reels and an app that emphasizes short-form content. In other words, YouTube already had the long-form game down and now it’s moving into TikTok’s territory. And we can't forget about Instagram which, despite it all, is pushing video harder than ever before. All of this in a world where AI can generate photos and videos out of nothing to boot. 

On that note, this is one of the first articles in a while about a major media company that ISN’T talking about some kind of AI feature coming soon or now. 

TechCrunch wonders aloud whether this longer-form content is really what TikTok needs to compete since its audience is trained and honed for short-form content. Then again, Instagram started out as an app for posting photos and now it’s…something else entirely.
