Meet Christoffer Relander – a Finnish Photographer with a pure love for his environment since he was a child. And now, he’s using a multiple exposures technique to capture these environments and his homeland’s landscape in Mason Jars. Sounds surreal, hey?

Christoffer’s Work & His Story

His inspiration stems from his childhood days when he spent days collecting ladybugs, grass and ants.

Christoffer grew up in the countryside of southern Finland and it is one place that he loves to revisit as an adult. This was the environment that Christoffer fell in love with when he was a child and most of the wooden landscapes that he has captured, are from here.

His famous project “Jarred and Displaced” combines clean images of the jars with black and white landscapes that he collects from forests, neighborhoods and other steep ridges.

Amazingly, Christoffer does not use any software to manipulate the images but, shoots the pictures on medium format film and manipulates the photographs in the camera itself.

This project is completely analog where Christoffer deliberately decided to avoid any digital processes. The pictures he creates look like beautifully crafted terrariums.

Christoffer says that he enjoys this technique because it enables him to create artworks that otherwise would only be possible through painting or digital manipulation in an external software.

Inspired by his work, Christoffer has been commissioned by companies like

  • Adobe,
  • Nikon,
  • Oxford University Press, and
  • The Finnish Forest Industry.

When Christoffer was asked about his project “Jarred and Displaced,” he says,

“For over a year now I’ve been collecting landscapes in jars using analog double exposures—in this project I have realized a childish dream. I play with the idea of being an ambitious collector; conserving my environments into a large personal collection.

Most landscapes are from where I grew up, on the countryside in the south of Finland, where my roots still lie. Separation anxiety to my childhood is simply what absorbed me into this project.

With analog multiple exposures I’m able to manipulate my photographs in-camera—this project was not created or manipulated in an external software such as Photoshop.

All double exposures are shot on medium format film that I develop and scan myself. I print pigment prints on museum quality paper, these are available in limited editions.”

“Life is like a camera. Just focus on what’s important and capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don’t work out, just take another shot.” — Unknown
