Photography Challenges to Develop Creativity

If someone were to take a few hundred random photos, it’s likely that at least some of them would turn out to be pretty good. I experienced this for myself when I first started out in landscape photography. However, I found that whenever I attempted to take a specific type of photo, my lack of skill became quite obvious. When I took this shot of Marymere Falls, for example, I struggled to work through the details of setting up my camera. It wasn’t until returning years later that I was able to come away with the shot I had hoped for.

Over the years, I’ve learned that one of the best ways to learn about photography is to shoot with a specific intent in mind. That’s where Visual Wilderness Challenge comes in. If you’re hoping to develop your technical skills and your eye for composition, these assignments will guide your time in the field by providing specific goals for you to work toward.

What is VW Challenge?

  • VW Challenges are a short photography assignments that will help you to push your skills to the next level by giving you an intention to keep in mind while you are shooting.
  • After completing the assignments, you’ll have the opportunity to share your images in the comments with fellow learners and to be inspired by their interpretations of the assignments.
  • We’ll do our best to follow up every assignment with a blog post that will highlight some of the most interesting images we receive. That means you’ll get the chance to be published on Visual Wilderness!
  • No purchase or subscription fee necessary to participate in VW Challenge. Participation is absolutely free.

We hope you’ll make the most out of VW Challenges by committing to push yourself and give your absolute best with every assignment. Here’s a video from Varina showing how you can learn and grow through the challenges.

  • First of all, participate! Embracing challenges is one of the best ways to improve your photography.
  • Set goals for yourself. Though it’s not required, we encourage you to create new images for the assignments instead of simply submitting ones you’ve taken in the past. Why? Shooting with a specific intent in mind or giving yourself a goal for your time in the field will help you to develop creativity and to learn to approach your subject in a new way.
  • View the work of other photographers to get ideas for how a specific task can be accomplished in different ways.
  • Provide feedback to your fellow learners and be sure to let them know when you like what they’ve done. For every photo you submit, we ask you to please vote for two or three other photos that you love.
  • Be consistent. Over time, you will see that you are able to approach your subject matter more creatively and come away with dramatic, eye-catching photos.

Are you ready to jump in and get started? Here is your first challenge.

vw3-minmalism vs inclusivness#3: MINIMALISM VS. INCLUSIVENESS

Objective: Capture a single scene or subject in multiple different ways.

About Author Jay Patel

I could startoff like this – “Seeds of Jay Patel’s appreciation for beautiful places were planted early in his childhood….” but it would get boring really fast. I will just sum it up and say that I am a Landscape and Wilderness Photographer who loves to capture dramatic light. My photographs have been published in various magazines, calendars and advertising materials throughout the world.

Patience is a virtue...unless you are chasing your dreams

The lens in focus

“Life is like a camera. Just focus on what’s important and capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don’t work out, just take another shot.” — Unknown
