What is the best way to get the creative juices flowing?
This is one of the frequently asked questions and also a difficult one to answer. If someone were to take a few hundred random photos, it’s likely that at least some of them would turn out to be pretty good. I experienced this for myself when I first started out in landscape photography. However, I found that whenever I attempted to take a specific type of photo, my lack of skill became quite obvious. When I took this shot of Marymere Falls, for example, I struggled to work through the details of setting up my camera. It wasn’t until returning years later that I was able to come away with the shot I had hoped for.

Over the years, I’ve learned that one of the best ways to learn about photography is to shoot with a specific intent in mind. That’s where Creative Challenges come in. If you’re hoping to develop your technical skills and your eye for composition, these assignments will guide your time in the field by providing specific goals for you to work toward.
