Apple Possibly Developing a $3,000, Dual-8K Mixed Reality Headset

This must be the week for mixed reality headsets because now we’re getting word that none other than Apple is also working on its own device.

Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of such a product but this is the first time we’ve gotten so much concrete information about it.

And this one will be much cheaper than the Canon device we discussed before (you can check out that article here).

Coming in at a rumored $USD 3,000 price point, Apple’s mixed reality headset reportedly combines two 8K displays and 12 cameras, PetaPixel writes.

All of this comes courtesy of a report from The Information which cites an internal source at Apple that describes a headset in the late stages of development. How late? A potential release is slated for next year, according to the rumor, so we would assume the device is pretty far along in its development.

The headset apparently resembles a VR device in that the eyes are closed off from the outside world thus allowing for a totally immersive experience. Like the Canon device, the Apple headset will allow users to place objects in virtual space using augmented reality technology. The dozen cameras with which the device is equipped will detect the wearer’s hand movements as well as line of sight using LiDAR. Like the rest of Apple’s lineup, this mixed reality headset will likely be powered by Apple’s own chips.

While markedly cheaper than the Canon device, the market positioning of this as-yet-unannounced Apple product cannot really be determined. After all, there are Apple users willing to pay 10s of thousands of dollars for a Mac Pro so saying that a $USD 3,000 headset is out of the reach of Apple’s diehards is probably not the most accurate statement.

What do you think of Apple getting into the mixed reality headset market? Could this be the breakthrough on the consumer level that we’ve all waited patiently for these long years? Or will it be a niche product at best from a consumer standpoint? Let us know your thoughts on this in the comments section below.
