Facebook might expand upon its Messenger Kids app with an Instagram app just for kids.
But you don’t have to take our word for it.
Buzzfeed reports that Instagram’s own Adam Mosseri said as much, commenting in a response to product transparency and shielding children online, “We have to do a lot here, but part of the solution is to create a version of Instagram for young people or kids where parents have transparency or control. It’s one of the things we’re exploring.”
Vishal Shah, Vice President of Product at Instagram, underscored this sentiment:
“I’m excited to announce that going forward, we have identified youth work as a priority for Instagram and have added it to our H1 priority list. We will be building a new youth pillar within the Community Product Group to focus on two things: (a) accelerating our integrity and privacy work to ensure the safest possible experience for teens and (b) building a version of Instagram that allows people under the age of 13 to safely use Instagram for the first time.”
Instagram also outlined specific measures it is taking at the app level to limit interactions between adults and younger users on their platforms. These changes come on top of constant effort by the platform to remain relevant to increasingly diverse audiences and segments of the market, some of which we have covered on this blog.
One of the major challenges Instagram faces where the younger market is concerned is remaining relevant over time and, given how intense competition is in the social media industry, that’s easier said than done.
