Die heute fast vergessene Zaida Ben-Yusuf zählte zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts mit ihrem New Yorker Studio zu den angesagtesten Kunstportraitistinnen der Zeit. Obwohl sie nur wenige Jahre ihres Lebens besonders intensiv der Fotografie widmete, steht sie stellvertretend für zahlreiche „neue Frauen“ ihrer Zeit, die selbstbewusst und selbstständig gegen widrige Umstände aktiv ihr Leben nach eigenen Vorstellungen gestalteten.
